PCS has an active Supported Employment Program with dedicated employees ready to assist our clients who have a strong desire to work. We support and encourage independence and responsibility and hope that you can truly benefit from our services.

Once you choose PCS to guide you through the employment process, one of our employment specialists will call and set up a time to come and meet with you. This will be our initial consultation, and at this time we will go over this handbook and answer any questions that you may have. It will also be a great time for us to get to know each other since we will be working closely to help you achieve your goals. During our initial consultation, you are welcome to invite your family or other people who will support you during this process. Our employment specialists will go over important forms that you must fill out, and at that point we will set up another appointment to schedule an assessment, which will consist of two parts. The first part will be an interview, in which the specialist will ask basic questions that will help you determine what it is that you would like to do. After the interview, the specialist will then do some hands-on activities. During the activity session we will go out into the community to get a feel of your knowledge of things such as communicating with others, transportation, handling of money, and awareness of your surroundings. The activity portion will also give us an idea of your capabilities and skills.

Once we have completed your assessment, we will sit down together and go over the results. From the information that was gathered we will have a better understanding of what area you would like to pursue. During this time you will develop a job plan which will consist of your interest, abilities, skills, and the goal(s) that you have set for yourself. It will also contain how many hours you want to work and the salary that you desire.
Remember you are in complete control and we are only here to help guide you. After you have set a goal, we will send you through our brief vocational training and coaching program that is geared to help you acquire job readiness skills. The skills addressed are:
  • Interviewing
  • Resume development
  • Filling out applications
  • Communication and Social Skills
  • Good work habits
  • Team work
  • Employee etiquette
Once you have completed this program you will be assigned a job coach who will begin searching for a job based on your job plan. The job coach will contact potential employers and set up interviews for you based on your skills and abilities. This may take some time so we ask that you do not get discouraged. Be assured that there will always be someone working hard to find a job for you. Our number one goal is to find a job that you will enjoy and progress in. At any time you may contact your job coach to find out the status of the job search. Once an interview has been scheduled, the job coach will go with you to assist you during the interview and help you answer any question that the employer may ask. The job coach will also help you fill out any necessary paper work and explain anything that is unclear to you. Note: There may be several employers interested in meeting with you, however it is your choice as to which job you want to interview for. We will be there to help you make a good decision that is right for you.

Once you have been hired, your job coach will go with you to your orientation, and help the employer explain exactly what you will be doing on the job, as well as the policies and procedures and safety rules of the job. Once you actually begin working, your job coach will accompany you to your job each day and assist you in learning the tasks associated with your new position. Your job coach will be there to help you through this transition period. This will take some time to adjust to, but your job coach will be there until you are completely comfortable working alone. At this point, the job coach will begin to cut back the amount of time that they spend with you at work. This is called phasing out. As you began working more independently, all parties involved will discuss exactly when you can work without the aid of the job coach.
After you have begun work, PCS will continue to provide you with on-going supports to help you keep your job. Your current Job Coach or designee will help you develop the goals and strategies that will encourage your growth and stability in your job.
The first goal will be to maintain or improve the quality and production of your work at the site. Your Job Coach will be making monthly visits on the job site to observe your work and assist you in any work-related problems that might arise. During this time, your Job Coach will ask your employer to fill out our Performance Evaluation Survey that will measure how well you are performing. Your Job Coach will share the results of your evaluations with you to help you to spot any problems that you may be having, and also commend you on your achievements. Specific work performance goals will be developed with you and your employer. The job coach will also have a refresher on the vocational skills you learned earlier during your program. There will also be available individualized on-site training as you begin to learn new responsibilities on your job. PCS also offers after- hours group sessions once a month, where you and your peers can sit with an employment specialist and discuss your work experiences. This will allow you to build peer relationships and help each other with issues you may have about your job.
